It’s been a project I wanted to do ever since two weeks ago when i found a camera flash at a junk shop for 50 cents. I burned it out so i had to wait until I got a new one, and today I said ‘to hell with waiting’ and I bought a disposable camera and ripped it apart.

My pictures of the fairly ugly product: I used two capacitors in series that I found in a couple Computer power supplies. Normally it’s one 350 volt 360 something capacitor, but two 20o volt ones with 460 whatevers each is better.

Got burned pretty strangely by 400 volts. Happy times.
I was launching 1/2 inch steel slugs off my porch that flew about 60-100 feet I’m guessing. Not much velocity, though. I need more capacitors and a bigger coil to get high speed projectiles.
Oh and if you try this yourself and taser yourself and die or shoot out an eyeball then I’m not responsible. Yes, you can make wicked and potentially VERY painful tasers out of this circuit as well. TUBSWEETIE edited this message on 05/17/2008 1:04AM |

I recognize the wound my Tesla coil gave me a similar one once, usually harmless tho.

I did a new one today. It’s pretty much exactly the same only in a pretty silver plastic shell. And it has a flashing neon light inside. Log in to see images!
the other day I had a charging unit that ran off a 6 volt lead-acid battery and would charge the capacitors in 2 seconds flat. It drew 3 amps off the battery. Compared to the 15 seconds it takes for my current AA powered charger it was a beast. Problem was it burnt itself out when I left the firing switch on. Once I get some more flashes from the Salvation Army I’ll be ready to destroy. I’ve figured out a relay-based firing system that’ll cut off the charger when it fires so it won’t risk burning out again.
I’ll take some pictures tomorrow for your enjoyment.

Notice that it has a laser sight. It’s horribly weak compared to the other one I’m working on but i want it to not kill people just yet. I also don’t have any slugs for this one. The steel rods I got must be some ****ty alloy and it’s totally not magnetic at all. And shooting finish nails off my porch is no fun. I also got an ancient MbumIVE flash charger from salvation army the other day that’ll be the brain behind my bigger one. Perhaps tomorrow afternoon will see that one finished. |
